Tell Me About…

Filed under: Interviewing — Larry @ 10:12 am

Nothing tells you more about how prepared you feel for an interview than your internal reaction when you hear the words, “Tell me about…”.
Questions like:
“Tell me about yourself.”
“Tell me about a time when you missed an obvious solution to a problem.”
“Tell me about a problem that you’ve solved in a unique or unusual way.”

These are just a few of the favorite questions of interviewers, and are called “Behavioral Interview Questions.” It is an easy way for interviewers to:
– focus on the particular skills, experiences and abilities that are important to them
– determine if you are well-prepared for meetings
– determine your verbal communication skills; particularly important if you will be working with customers
– determine how you acted under similar circumstances in your previous jobs
– determine how well you can turn a ‘negative’ into a ‘positive’.

If you are prepared, these types of questions give you an incredible opportunity to show yourself at your best without having to sound like you are bragging.

There are two sites that are very helpful in preparing for these behavioral questions:
